Bales of Wool Anyone?

It is that time of year. Shearers are starting to schedule shearing dates, which means we will start receiving phone calls about buying bales of wool from local ranchers. In hopes of keeping a lot of wool out of the garbage piles, I thought I would reach out to my fiber world and see if anyone is interested in bales of wool. Don't worry, I will still be selling our fleeces as individual fleeces, because not everyone needs big bales of wool.

Types of wool available in my area: Targhee, Polypay, Targhee Rambouillet cross, Suffolk-Hampshire- Dorset cross. What happens when we buy and sell bales of wool? We work directly with the rancher and always join them on the day of shearing. I skirt every fleece, measure the staple length, and test for soundness. All fleece that meets the standard of what is needed by the buyer will then get compressed into a bale. Bales can range from 200 - 400 lbs. depending on how many sheep are shorn and the breed.

Wool compressed into big rectangular bags are called Baled wool.

Being a buyer and how it works. If you are interested in purchasing a bale of wool, the first step is to reach out to me, and we can talk about what you are looking for. We will discuss the breed, what you hope to make, or where you plan to have it milled. I will then see if I can find the wool that will fit your needs.

Prices - The price of the baled wool will be based on the market value, what the rancher is asking for their wool and how much the bale weighs. I will handle all the negotiating and then charge you a small percentage fee for the work I do in finding and gathering the wool. If a match is made, I will require a non-refundable deposit to be paid before I attend the shearing.
